About us
In Europe people are living longer. The consequences of this have a considerable effect on both, the health and long term care sectors throughout the European communities. As a result, care homes and nursing homes in each country are challenged to achieve high quality services at reasonable cost, although confronted with the same demands. In order to discuss together the problems of care and assistance for our elder citizens, the chairmen of several national associations of directors of care homes in Europe held their first meeting in Hamburg in 1987.
One important objective of this meeting was to strengthen exchange of interests and practice, and to install regular meetings to open up opportunities for exchange of information and experience between the different national associations. In fact, at these meetings certain decisions were taken and given broad diffusion such as the quality of care and nursing assistance for elder citizens in homes, and the conditions in which staff in the home care sector in Europe can efficiently carry out their work.
On 6th April 1989, the E.D.E. (European Association for Directors and Providers of Long-Term Care Services for the Elderly) was founded in Luxembourg. The E.D.E. is a professional organisation of residential and nursing home managers from all European countries.

Aims
The aim of the associations is the promotion of co-operation of national association and corresponding national institutions of care for elder people as well as their representation on a European level.
The tasks of the E.D.E. include in particular:
- working in and counselling organisations and committees active in the area of the social and health care of the elderly on a European level
- counselling national associations for directors and providers of long-term care services on questions of residential and day-patient care of the elderly
- promoting the exchange of information concerning national developments in the area of social and health care of the elderly
- organising international congresses, conferences, training programmes and study trips
- initiating cross-border research projects in the area of care for the elderly
- developing standard guidelines for the professional training of directors of long-term care services and raising the qualification standards for directors of long-term care services
- improving the social status of the profession of director of long-term care services
- coordinating the aims and work of national associations
- carrying out public relations work and influencing lawmakers‘ decisions in the area of long-term care.

The Association was founded in Luxembourg on April 6, 1989 and bears the name "European Association for Directors and Providers of Long-Term Care Services for the Elderly a.s.b.l.".

Membership
The association consists of full, co-opted and associate members.
Full members
A full member is one who belongs to either an officially legally recognized or non legally recognized national association, that is a union of directors of homes in the care for elder people.
In countries, where there are no national associations of directors working in the care for the elderly people, the Home directors can be co-opted members.
Co-opted members
Co-opted members do not have the right to vote.
Associate members
Associate members can be any person or organisation who is ready to support the purposes of the association. Associate members do not have right to vote.
Charter and code of professional conduct
Today‘s demographic changes pose massive socio-economic challenges for elderly care services in many European countries. New supranational eff orts and strategies are necessary for elderly and disabled care in the future, to improve the quality of life of the elderly and disabled. To enable the national associations represented by the E.D.E. to actively and proactively infl uence developments, the E.D.E. conveys among other things the following values and standards of conduct for directors:
European Charter of the rights and freedoms of older persons accommodated in homes (Maastricht, 1993)
Code of Professional Conduct (Ljubljana, 2005)
